WHAT IS A BACKYARD BREEDER?
This term is used to describe
a breeder who basically has a pet quality beagle and breeds them to any
other pet quality beagle without regards for any possible genetic problems,
breed type or welfare of the breed. They have a nice pet "and want
one just like it" or "want to give someone else the opportunity to own
a nice beagle."
is not involved in the breed club
has not researched the backgrounds of
parents, grandparents, or great grandparents for any genetic problems
has not studied the AKC standard for
does not give a written contract or
agree to take the puppy back if you for any reason cannot keep the puppy
has not done any screening test for
thyroid problems, hip dysplasia, eye problems, etc.
looks for any male to breed to their
female and the cheaper the better
advertises in the newspaper
sells all puppies by six weeks and sooner
thinks they can make money selling puppies
(that's is a laugh)
often raises the puppies in a dirt pen
they sell cheap and will promote unusual
colors (blues and chocolates) as "rare" and ask a higher price.
sells at flea markets
does not ask questions about what type
home you will give their puppy, they just want the $$$$$
I think you get the idea.
So Sally Sue down the road that bred her lovely pet to Joe 's male
across town and has eight puppies- may be a backyard breeder.
